Support to the reforestation of the fire-damaged areas of the METU Atatürk Forest
Environment is one of the top priorities of the European Union. The Union works for preserving nature and biodiversity, having cleaner air and fighting climate change. For attaining all these goals, forests play a key role.
Caring for and expanding the areas for forests are not only important for the EU citizens but also for the Turkish people. In order to underline the importance the EU gives to environment issues and support the forestation efforts in Turkey, the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey decided to contribute to the “Reforestation of the fire-damaged areas of the METU Atatürk Forest” in Turkey.
The reforestation will initially consist of 5000 trees in Ankara as part of the forest of the Middle East Technical University in ORAN district. The University’s forest was damaged by fires in 2007. The project not only foresees the planting of new trees in the areas which were burnt down but also the rehabilitation of the damaged soil.
