International Conference on ‘Local Administration Reform in Turkey’

In the context of the EU-funded Project titled ‘Local Administration Reform Programme’, an ‘International Conference on Local Administration Reform in Turkey’ will be held on 30-31 October 2007 in Ankara.

In the two-day conference, national and international guest speakers will present and discuss a number of issues ranging from the alignment of local administration system in Turkey with European principles and standards to democracy, accountability and participation in the management of local public services. The conference will conclude with an evaluation of Turkey’s strategy to effectively undertake and complete the process of local administration reform within the context of Turkey’s integration to the European Union.

‘Support to Local Administration Reform in Turkey’ is an EC-MEDA funded Project implemented by the Ministry of Interior (General Directorate for Local Authorities) with technical assistance and training provided by the United Nations Development Programme (Turkey). The Project aims to support the implementation of the Local Administration Reform Programme of the Turkish Government by increasing the capacities of the key stakeholders (Ministry of Interior including Governorships, District-Governorships, Local Authorities and their Unions at regional and national level) for the implementation of reforms.
