Greenhouse: call for applications for Mediterranean documentary filmmakers

Mediterranean filmmakers interested in making feature-length documentaries are being given the opportunity to register, before 15 July 2007, for a unique development programme.

For its second round of sessions, the Greenhouse project is starting a one-year intensive structured programme consisting of three seminars, of four days each, targeting the most promising young documentary directors and producers from the MEDA region, namely: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.

A team of international and MEDA experts will select a maximum of 12 projects and their attached director/producer teams, with up to 24 participants being chosen to take part in the programme.

Greenhouse's seminars will explore all aspects of documentary filmmaking geared towards the big screen. Each of the participating projects will be mentored through personal one-on-one tutorial sessions networked through the Greenhouse website so that, by the end of the programme year, the participants will have a fully-developed production package. This will include a developed script, a detailed international budget and financial plan and a strategic marketing and distribution plan. The package will be presented to the European and Mediterranean cinema industry, as well as at international festivals.

Applicants must be citizens of a MEDA country. Each director/producer team will be required to participate in a full series of three seminars over a period of one year. The project submitted may be at any stage of development, including with initial footage shot.

Those selected to participate will be awarded a grant covering tuition fees, return flights, accommodation and meals during the seminars.

The Greenhouse project is funded by the European Union within the framework of the Euromed Audiovisual II Programme. 80 applications were received in 2006 for the first round of sessions and 10 projects were selected from Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Palestine and Israel. The filmmakers who worked with their mentors during the first stage now have full written proposals. These have already been sent to several international development funds and TV stations and have been received with great interest. One project has secured funding from the CNC, France. All projects will be pitched in front of representatives of film funds, distributors & commissioning editors from European TV channels during the third and final seminar of the current round in October 2007.
