Education in focus in the winning drawings of the Drawing Competition on Gender Equality

For the third year in a row, the European Commission launched an international drawing competition on gender equality on International Women's Day 8 March 2009. This competition called on children in developing countries to express their vision of gender equality through a drawing. The selection of the 14 winning drawings took place on 23 June in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Mathilde of Belgium and Mr Koos Richelle, Director General for EuropeAid Cooperation Office at the European Commission. The jury was made of 49 primary school pupils of the European School of Brussels I, representing the 27 European Union Members States. The choice of the children was mainly focused on education such as the rights for both girls and boys to go to school and to study for a profession.

Turkey was represented by 10 drawings in the competition which has attracted 25,000 students from all over the world. Two drawings by young artists Kayra Menekşe (Ozel Yuzyil Isil Okulu, Sariyer/Istanbul) and Eda Unsal (Ozel Erenkoy Isik Ilkogretim Okulu, Istanbul) paved their way up successfully and competed at the finals.

An exhibition of the winning drawings will be inaugurated in November 2009 in Morroco at the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
