High school students gear up for Europe Quiz
The Europe Quiz continues with the participation of around 1000 schools from 15 provinces across Turkey.
The Quiz, organised jointly by the Ministry of Education, the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey and the EU Information Network, consisting of the European Union Information Centre in Ankara and Istanbul and the EU Information Relays in Adana, Antalya, Bursa, Denizli, Diyarbakır, Edirne, Gaziantep, İzmir, Kayseri, Mersin, Trabzon, Samsun and Van, aims to provide high school students with accurate and objective information about the EU besides encouraging them to do research.
The participation rate is very high to the contests where a team made up of four first-grade high school students. About 5000 students and teachers from around 1000 are taking part in the Quiz. Every school team is trained by an advisor teacher for the contests.
In Ankara, the city championship was won by Çubuk Anadolu Lisesi. “Knowledge and awareness on the European Union (EU) will bring us closer to our target to take our place within the EU family,” said Muray Bey Balta, the Director of Ankara National Education Department, speaking at the closely contested finals at Nevzat Ayaz Vocational High School yesterday and added: “In this European journey, our students must be equipped with the relevant knowledge of the Union.” Students participating in the Europe Quiz are asked on European geography, history, institutions, EU –Turkey relations, EU policies and general knowledge and gave correct answers to the most of the questions.
In Diyarbakır, Güler Şevki Özbek Lisesi became the city champion in the Europe Quiz whereas the championship was won in Bursa by Hasan Ali Yücel Lisesi, in Gaziantep by Ondokuz Mayıs Lisesi and in Trabzon by Affan Kitapçıoğlu Lisesi. The provincial finals for Istanbul will be held on the 15th April at Bahçelievler Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Turhan Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi, where the team to represent Istanbul in the national finals will be determined. The winners from the cities will be determined by the 20th April.
The winner from the 15 cities participating in the competition will meet for the national-level finals in May in Ankara. The champion team and the advisor teacher will be awarded a trip to Brussels and Berlin this summer. Other finalists and city champions will receive cameras and i-pods.
