European Digital Library opening in November 2008

Through the online library, Europeana, Europe's cultural diversity will be open to everyone at the click of a mouse. The prototype website which will be launched in November 2008, will give users direct access to some 2 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers.

The Digital Libraries Initiative was launched in 2005. It is a flagship initiative of the Commission's overall strategy to boost the digital economy, the i2010 strategy.
