EU and Turkey working together for a better environment

During a visit to Aydin on the Aegean coast of Turkey, the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey, Ambassador Marc Pierini, stressed that environment was one of the top priorities of the European Union. “Through the pre-accession programmes, we are trying to improve the living standards of Turkish citizens,” he said as he paid a visit to several EU funded projects on-site, including the rehabilitation and management plan for the Büyük Menderes River basin within the framework of the “CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT TO THE WATER SECTOR IN TURKEY” twinning project and the construction of a regional solid waste management facilities in Kuşadası, Davutlar, Güzelçamlı and Söke sub provinces.

The Ambassador stated that all stakeholders, farmers, fishermen, NGOs, municipalities and government institutions should work closely to prepare an integrated water management plan for the Büyük Menderes River under the guidance of the twinning project. He said: “We had similar problem in Europe but there is a way to solve it as we learned from our experience.“
