EU celebrates 30th year of Erasmus with students from across Turkey

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus+ Programme, the EU Delegation to Turkey will get together with university students from across Turkey at the EU-Turkey Youth Forum in İstanbul on 28 April. The opening will be attended by Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey Ambassador Christian Berger, EU Ministry Acting Undersecretary Ambassador Selim Yenel and IKV President Mr Ayhan Zeytinoğlu.

The Forum will focus not only on the success stories of the Erasmus+ Programme but also on topics such as education, training, and volunteering for a sustainable economy, with panels discussing the European Voluntary Services, young entrepreneurship, investing in the young generation, youth employability and future jobs.

Moderated by Kaan Yakuphan, the speakers will include diverse names, such as Ufuk Tarhan, futurist; Prof. Dr. Şermin Örnektekin, one of the first exchange students of Turkey; İrem Sefa Yayımlar, young entrepreneur and activist; Yüksel Aksu, film director, and Wilco Van Herpen, traveller and documentarist.

Background:

In January 2017, the European Commission launched a campaign marking the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus+ programme. Events are taking place throughout the year to highlight the positive impact of Erasmus both on individuals and society as a whole, and to give all those involved the opportunity to debate how the programme should evolve in the future. Over the past 30 years, Erasmus+ and its predecessors have supported not only more than 5 million students, apprentices and volunteers, but also staff and youth exchanges, amounting to 9 million people in total. The current seven year programme (2014-2020) has a budget of €14.7 billion - a 40% increase compared to previous spending levels, reflecting the EU's commitment to invest in Europe's youth. Turkey joined in 2004. Between then and 2015 almost half a million Turkish citizens benefited from Erasmus+ and its predecessors. The budget allocated to Turkey as part of the programme has exceeded 830 M €. Also, over 55.000 people from the EU have visited Turkey with the support of these programmes.
