Message from the President 

"The crisis poses huge challenges. It also presents us with significant opportunities. Our short-term actions must lay the basis for sustainable and equitable growth in future", said president Barroso in a speech at the annual congress of the European Economic Association in Barcelona on 25 August 2009. "I think that we have been strengthened by the crisis. We now know that, to safeguard our prosperity, we must co-ordinate our policies better and earlier in future." he added.

EU invests € 18 million in future ultra high-speed mobile internet

As of 1 January 2010, the EU will invest € 18 million into research that will underpin next generation 4G mobile networks. The European Commission just decided to start the process of funding research on Long Term Evolution (LTE) Advanced technology, that will offer mobile internet speeds up to a hundred times faster than current 3G networks.

European Water Policy

Both the European Union decision-makers and the EU citizens consider the “water issue” a priority for the European Union in the 21st century. From the EU’s involvement in the World Water Forum in March 2009 to the Swedish term-presidency’s focus on the water issue in particular, the Union is looking for ways to prevent water pollution and avoid water shortages.

 Reaching out to the community 

The European Union Information Centres of Istanbul and Ankara carried out, throughout 2008 and 2009, a series of trainings for “muhtars,” or village administrators. The training aimed to familiarize the muhtars with basic European Union information in an inter-active format and to reply to their questions about the European Union.

A Success Story: Consultation Services to Taxpayers Project

Funded by the EU, the Taxpayer Call Centre enables taxpayers to promptly access reliable tax information. The Centre, which reminds taxpayers of their dues, and assists in deferment and instalment issues, as well as accepting suggestions and complaints, responds to 2 million queries a year.
