9 May 2020 Europe Day Activities

The European Union set off on a path towards peace and solidarity 70 years ago with the announcement of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May, 1950.  Since 1985, 9 May has been celebrated by the EU Institutions and in all EU member states and candidate countries as Europe Day.

As the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, we, too, have celebrated 9 May through a variety of events held across the four corners of Türkiye, from concerts to discussion panels, and from film festivals to Ramadan tents. This year as well, despite the extraordinary situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, we want to continue bringing people together with a programme of music and debate that will be broadcasted on 9 May at noon time on the EU in Türkiye youtube channel and on various Turkish media.

The programme will feature EU-Türkiye relations including the 1950 Schuman Declaration, EU-Türkiye cooperation, as well as discussions about topical issues like Covid-19 and the EU's response. It will also feature musical performances by the EU Youth Orchestra and musicians in Türkiye.

The programme will feature guests from Turkish politics, media, arts, and academia, including the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of EU Affairs Ambassador Kaymakcı, the Head of the Turkish Municipalities Union Fatma Şahin and IKV Chairman Ayhan Zeytinoğlu.

Academic Prof. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, author Ahmet Ümit and researcher Bekir Ağırdır will express their opinion on the pandemic. Artists from Türkiye and the EU will also share their views. A video compiling examples of EU funded projects will offer an insight into our multifaceted cooperation through time.

In the programme, the European Union Youth Orchestra will be joined by artists from Borusan İstanbul Philharmonic Orchestra for a concert featuring European music from Beethoven to Ravel.

Join us on Saturday, 9 May at 12:00h on the Youtube channels of EU in Türkiye, T24, Karar TV and Superhaber TV, and on NTV and A-Haber TV channels.
