Food Safety System in Turkey is further strengthened through EU support
The closing event of the EU-supported "Capacity Building regarding Official Controls, Animal Welfare, Zoonoses and Animal By-product Management" project will take place on 26 October 2018 in Ankara. The event will be attended by the Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Dr Nihat Pakdil and Deputy Head of Trade Section of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Giulio Gentile.
Food safety has a direct impact on the daily lives of farmers, food producers, traders, consumers, and ultimately all citizens. The European Union's integrated approach to food safety policy covers food from farm to fork. It is designed to guarantee: (i) safe and nutritious food and animal feed, (ii) high standards of animal health, welfare and plant protection and, (iii) clear information on the origin, content, labelling and use of food.
The European Union (EU) has been supporting food safety in Turkey for more than 15 years. Several projects have helped Turkey to improve food and feed safety control systems, animal health, animal by-products and plant health. The total financial support to these sectors has reached nearly 275 million Euros.
Under this two and a half year project, staff from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoAF) worked along French and Hungarian experts to improve food and feed control systems, animal welfare, zoonoses and animal by-product management. During the course of the project, inspection manuals and checklists have been prepared and a Multi-annual Control Plan was developed.
"The implementation of a fully operational and EU compliant food safety system in Turkey is crucial for completing the alignment in this area of the acquis" said the Head of EU Delegation, Ambassador Christian Berger, on this occasion.
The total budget of the project was 2 million Euros, with an EU contribution of 1.9 million Euros.
