The EU Ambassadors in Türkiye visited the east of Türkiye on the famous “Eastern Express Train"
The delegation first gathered at the historical Ankara Railway Station where they met with the Deputy Ministers of Transportation, Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan and Mr. Selim Dursun.
Their spectacular 2-day journey started with a meeting on EU-Türkiye cooperation with the participation of the deputy ministers and ambassadors.
The first day of the visits started in Sivas. Welcomed by Divriği Mayor Mr. Hakan Gök at the historical train station, the ambassadors visited the Ulu Cami and Divriği city centre in. The next destination was Erzurum!
At minus 13 degrees and in heavy snowfall on a beautiful winter night, the EU Ambassadors visited Erzurum’s iconic Çifte Minareli Medrese and Üç Kümbetler from the Seljuk era, both splendid attractions with their unique architecture.
Head of the EU Delegation to Türkiye Ambassador Berger and the EU Ambassadors not only tasted Erzurum’s unique delicacy Cağ Kebab but also learned how to slice it!
On the last day of their visit, the EU Ambassadors arrived in Sarıkamış, the land of martyrs. The Head of the EU Delegation to Türkiye Ambassador Christian Berger and the ambassadors of the EU member states started the day with a visit to the Sarıkamış Martyrs Memorial, built in memory of soldiers fallen during WWI.
Ambassadors also visited the ancient town of Ani, the starting point of the Silk Road in Anatolia, where the first settlement dates back to 5,000 years ago. The ambassadors visited the Ani Ruins with churches and mosques along the magnificent Arpaçay stream. Dr. Ercan Cengiz and Associate Professor Oktay Kızılkaya, both academics from Kafkas University, guided them on the tour. The EU Ambassadors paid a visit to Kars Governor Mr. Türker Öksüz, and spoke with him about EU projects as well as tourism, livestock, and opportunities for cooperation in the city. The EU Ambassadors visited Ms. Şevin Alac, the co-mayor of Kars as well. During the meeting, they discussed Kars as an example of close cooperation along with opportunities and the city’s tourism potential. The last stop of the EU Ambassadors in Kars was Kafkas University. The Head of the EU Delegation to Türkiye Ambassador Berger and the EU Ambassadors held a meeting with Kafkas University Rector Hüsnü Kapu and academics before leaving the city.
