EU Beach Clean-Up Initiative in Antalya
Ambassador Christian Berger, Heads of Missions from EU Member States, representatives of the local authorities, EU Delegation Staff, volunteers and Erasmus students met in Antalya to join the EU's world-wide Global Beach Clean-Up campaign and raise awareness on the increasing challenges posed by marine litter. Mr. Catalin Gabriel Şopanda- Ambassador of Romania, Mr Peteris Karlis Elferts- Ambassador of Latvia, Mr. Pavel Kafka- Ambassador of the Czech Republic, Mr Georges Faber, Ambassador of Luxembourg, Mr Ivan Picukaric, Charges d'affaires of Croatia and Mr Wolfgang Wessel – German Consul in Antalya attended the event along with Mr. Nurettin Ateş, Deputy Governor, Mr. İbrahim Evrim Deputy Mayor and Mr. Davut Çetin, President of the Chamber of Commerce& Industry.
The event took place at the public Lara beach in Antalya, on Sunday, 30 September 2018. Volunteers, including renowned actress Ms Tuba Unsal, remarked particularly on the excessive amount of discarded cigarette butts and plastic waste left behind on the beach.
Ambassador Berger called attention to the possible threats facing the country's shores in the coming years, "Millions of tons of plastic waste ends up in our seas each year. According to research estimates, by 2050, there is a risk that there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. What we're trying to do is get an understanding of where we are today and to see what can be done going forward to prevent sea pollution," he was quoted by the press.
