EU-funded Twinning project helps "Improve the Detection Capacity of Turkish Customs Enforcement"

What is the scope of the project?

This Twinning project is part of a large-scale EU support package for the DG Customs Enforcement of the Ministry of Trade. It comprises, inter alia, the purchasing of boats, vehicles, sniffer dogs, x-ray scanners, narcotics and chemicals' detection devices, but also investments in "softer measures" such as Twinning and other technical assistance projects. The total EU contribution for the overall package, which is estimated at 17.6 million EUR, is over 90%.

What is expected by the project?

The expected results of the 1 million EUR Twinning project, implemented by the customs services of Italy and Spain, are twofold:

a) Enhanced container control at border crossing points and

b) increased capacity of the Turkish Customs Enforcement Control Centre – the project's end beneficiary – by providing policy advice on matters such as risk profiles. These goals go hand in hand with the Centre's mission & operation planning as well as control procedures.

In his address, the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Berger, emphasised that the ultimate goal of EU support in this sector of assistance is to ensure that, on one hand, state borders are well controlled and secured, but, at the same time, also open to facilitate the flow of people and licit goods.
