On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger, and representatives of EU Member States and like-minded countries present in Turkey, paid a solidarity visit to the Cumhuriyet newspaper in Ankara.

On 25 April, a court in Turkey handed down heavy imprisonment sentences for nine columnists and executives  of Cumhuriyet, who stood trial for 'aiding a terrorist organization without being its member' in a controversial case that has become symbolic of the challenge to press freedom in Turkey.  Ambassador Berger welcomed the release of all nine columnists and executives of Cumhuriyet, including Akın Atalay, the chairman of the newspapers executive board, who was present to meet the EU Member States, pending an appeal procedure.  Reciting the words of High Representative Federica Mogherini in her Declaration on behalf of the EU marking the World Press Freedom Day, Ambassador Berger stressed that "Attacks against media and journalists are attacks against democracy, against the freedom of all of us".
