Europe Mobility Week 2018 - Türkiye

Mix and Move!: This year's theme of the  European Mobility Week gathered big crowds in Türkiye

European Mobility Week was celebrated widely in Türkiye this year. Series of events took place in around 25 cities between 16-22 September that aims to acknowledge EU objectives set for sustainable transport policies; the municipalities held many events including shutting-down of various streets to traffic, awareness-raising activities, conferences, film screenings and urban cycling tours. 

This year's theme of the week Mix and Move! had 25 municipalities across Türkiye participating in the European Mobility Week under the coordination of the Turkish Union of Municipalities. As part of the Mobility Week events, on 21 September 21 Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Fatma Şahin took the tram to her office with the Head of EU Delegation to Türkiye, Ambassador Christian Berger, thus emphasising the importance of public transport. The next day, in Ankara, Bahçelievler Aşkaabat Street (7. Cadde) was closed to car traffic. Ambassador Berger, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director for EU Affairs Faruk Kaymakçı, Union of Municipalities of Türkiye Secretary General Hayrettin Güngör, EGO Deputy General Manager İsmail Özdemir and many EU Ambassadors took public busses equipped with bike racks to get to the 7th street and rode bikes along the street. Cycling tours were organized in İstanbul and many other cities like Bartın, Adana, Düzce, Elazığ, Bilecik…

Mr. Matej Zakonjsek, the Head of Cabinet of the European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport, participated in the events held in Istanbul and İzmir; he walked alongside and biked together with the Istanbulites and İzmirians and took part in model mobility actions. On 23 September, the Fancy Women Bike Ride “Süslü Kadınlar Bisiklet Turu” took place in İzmir, again with the participation of the EU Ambassador and his wife.

All of the events and activities had wide participation by Turkish people, raising awareness on EU objectives for sustainable transport policies.
