#EUBeachCleanup2022 Global Campaign to Draw Attention to Combating Marine Pollution in Türkiye
A series of events will be held in Türkiye from 20 October to 9 November as part of the global awareness initiative #EUBeachCleanup, organized jointly by the European Union, the United Nations, and Smurfs. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye and European Union Information Centres, beach clean-up and diving activities will take place in Çanakkale, İstanbul, Van, Samsun, Trabzon, and Şanlıurfa to draw attention to marine pollution.
As this year is designated as the European Year of Youth, youth will be at the centre stage of the #EUBeachCleanup2022 events. During the campaign, the youth will go to the beaches, raising awareness about clean oceans and the protection of biodiversity in marine ecosystems. The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut will attend the event on 20 October 2022 Thursday to add his voice to the call for combating marine pollution. This year, visitors can enjoy the 23-metre-long Digital Ocean Tunnel in Çanakkale, aiming to raise awareness about marine pollution.
The Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye and the European Union Information Centres have come up with an intensive beach clean-up schedule for the Turkish leg of the global Beach Clean-up Campaign, carried out in cooperation with the European Union, the United Nations, and Smurfs. As part of the events, various awareness raising activities will be organized in Çanakkale, Istanbul, Van, Samsun, Trabzon, and Şanlıurfa. The Turkish leg of the global awareness campaign for clean, plastic-free oceans will draw attention to the protection of biodiversity in the marine ecosystem. There will be a call to action to combat marine pollution. As part of the campaign, a 23-metre-long Digital Ocean Tunnel was built in Çanakkale, which the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut will visit. The experience of travelling in the digital ocean will demonstrate the importance of eliminating pollution at the source, consuming less and recycling in the fight against marine pollution. At the end of the tunnel, visitors will find an information display, explaining what needs to be done for a plastic-free and clean marine life.
Youth have the biggest responsibility.
Since the European Union has designated 2022 as the European Year of Youth across Europe, young people will be taking an active role in the Beach Clean-up activities this year, forming their own teams and participating in awareness raising activities in cooperation with civil society organizations. They will also draw attention to the protection of marine biodiversity.
We go to the beaches and clean up
Young people in Türkiye will be at Atakum Beach in Samsun on 21 October. In Şanlıurfa, young people will clean up Lake Halfeti for 10 days, from 20 to 24 October and plant trees around the lake at the end of the 10 days. In Van, an event titled "European Union Beach Clean-up: Saving Lake Van" will be held. On 1 November, young people will be on the beach in Şile, Istanbul, to draw attention to beach pollution and marine litter with civil society representatives. On 9 November 2022, an event titled "European Union Beach Clean-up: Children from Trabzon Unite against Marine Litter" will be held at Arsın Beach.
Digital Ocean Tunnel in Çanakkale
For the European Union Beach Clean-up Campaign, a Digital Ocean Tunnel was built in Çanakkale in cooperation with the Çanakkale Municipality, where the marine ecosystem, including creatures such as corals and sea urchins, is identically depicted. The Digital Ocean Tunnel, which Çanakkale residents will be able to visit free of charge from 20 to 22 October will feature a depiction of marine pollution towards the end.
The tunnel will demonstrate the importance of protecting biodiversity in the marine ecosystem, and at the end of the tunnel, visitors will be able to learn about what needs to be done to protect the marine ecosystem on an information display.
Ambassador Meyer-Landrut to visit Çanakkale
Organized globally, the European Union Beach Clean-up Campaign encourages people to participate in beach clean-up activities and promote micro-behavioural changes. The campaign supports the objectives of the European Green Deal, the development of a blue economy covering all economic activities related to oceans and seas, and the realisation of policies for the protection of sustainable coastal resources. To draw attention to all these goals, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, will visit the Digital Ocean Tunnel, built in Çanakkale. During the visit, the importance of societies and individuals taking action and developing behavioural change for the protection of diversity in the environment and marine ecosystems will be emphasized.
The #EUBeachCleanup2022 campaign is organized worldwide in cooperation between the European Union, the United Nations, and Smurfs. As part of #EUBeachCleanup2022, which is a global awareness initiative, this year, beach clean-up activities are being carried out with the participation of young people in a number of countries such as Mozambique, Algeria, Tunisia, United States, Jordan, Italy, Montenegro, and South Africa. The #EUBeachCleanup2022 global campaign is implemented in Turkey by way of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye and the European Union Information Centres.
