To mark the International Day for Mine Awareness, a very comprehensive documentary on demining operations will be screened by the Delegation of European Union to Turkey on 4 April 2019.
What is the scope of the EU funded project?
Turkey’s Defence Ministry, the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are working on a vast programme of demining and increased surveillance along the country’s eastern borders.
Funded by the EU and the Turkish Government, the 40 million euro initiative delivers a comprehensive package for security along its eastern borders. Border management is regarded as a priority for Turkey’s process of accessing the EU.
The programme aims to clear 551 minefields covering more than 15 million square meters and destroy a total of 222,000 landmines along the above mentioned border. It will also help to train border personnel and purchase surveillance equipment..
By strengthening safety, preventing illegal migration and transnational crime, the programme will contribute to the social and economic development of the region. The process itself will help employ more than 320 local staff in affected communities.
The European Union Delegation to Turkey will organize the screening of a documentary about the demining process in Turkey on 4 April with the attendance of all stakeholders. The movie will be available on the Delegation's website after the screening for the public to watch. The documentary, produced under a wider project, and relevant documents will be handed out to the press members during the screening
On the occasion of the event, Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of the European Union Delegation to Turkey underlined that “For Turkey’s border management reforms, demining is an indispensable part" and added his appreciation for "Turkey’s commitment to clearing these landmines which will allow a more humane and secure way of protecting the borders”
