Hissa Hilal is the voice from behind the veil: Her weapon is her word. She decides to take part in the “Million’s Poet” show, an Abu- Dhabi based Multi-Million Dollar TV show. It is the Arab world’s biggest poetry competition, and it is dominated by men. Hissa works herself up, becoming the first woman in the finals. In her poems she criticizes the patriarchal Arab society and she attacks one of the most notorious Saudi clerics for his extremist fatwas, live, in front of 75 million viewers. Hissa is suddenly breaking news in the biggest Western and Arab media. How did she gain the knowledge and the courage to step on stage and risk her life? This is Hissa’s story.
Independent filmmaker from Munich, Germany. She has realized numerous documentaries as producer/director, which have screened at international film festivals world wide and have won numerous awards.
After ten years of competing on the Windsurfers’ World Pro Tour he put an end to his career and started working as an assistant on film sets. His documentary debut “On the Other Side of Life”, which he co-directed with Stefanie Brockhaus, had its US premiere 2010 at SXSW Film Festival. His second documentary “The Captain and His Pirate” was released in 2013. It was officially selected for the 64th Berlin Film Festival.
