The EU Delegation in Ankara, the Turkish Red Crescent and Galatasaray Football Club partnered up to provide Syrian and Turkish children an unforgettable day. The children met with Galatasaray's football players on 16 April at GS's Florya Training Facility, spent time together talking about football, their hopes and dreams in the future. GS's Coach Fatih Terim and football players paid closed attention to the children and advised them about their future and how sports can help them. Two days later, 72 children from Kızılay Community Centers in İstanbul supported by the EU watched the game between Galatasaray and TM Akhisar and enjoyed GS's Türk Telekom Arena Stadium. The game kicked off with 22 children accompanying the football players to the field and carrying a banner with the event slogan: "We are in the field for solidarity, friendship and brotherhood/sisterhood."

Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Gabriel Munuera Vinals, Kızılay Vice-President İsmail Hakkı Turunç and Galatasaray 2nd President Ahmet Şenkal watched the game together and spoke to the press about the importance of bringing joy to vulnerable children and inspire them through sports to build a future. Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Gabriel Munuera Vinals thanked both partners and added "The event today is about children, giving all of these children the opportunity of having this fantastic experience, I believe children will remember this day forever." Both Galatasaray 2nd President Ahmet Şenkal and Kızılay Vice-President İsmail Hakkı Turunç addressed the importance of supporting children through sports regardless of their background and of bringing a smile to their faces even for a day.

The Turkish Red Crescent is one of the EU's most important partners in Turkey for supporting refugees. The EU funds 11 community centers of the Turkish Red Crescent though a project that aims to increase the resilience of Syrian refugees and host communities by improving their health, livelihoods and psychosocial well-being. The project also supports the Turkish Red Crescent by strengthening its capacity to reach the most vulnerable refugees and members of the host communities. Activities take place since December 2016 in 11 provinces of Turkey: Istanbul, Ankara, Konya, Kayseri, Hatay, Kilis, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Karamanmaras, Mersin and Mardin. GS Sports Culb is the only Turkish club to have won the UEFA championship – in 2000.
