Thorium: The Far Side of Nuclear Power - Thorium, La Face Gâchée Du Nucléaire - Luxembourg, France, Germany, China, Japan, The Netherlands, 2016, 105 ’

Among the first film directors to have freed animation in documentary from its mere illustration role, Myriam Tonelotto has developed for 20 years an original approach based on the dialogue between documentary and animation film. Building her films on an extensive investigative work, she then created a feature scenario that provides the spine to her documentary film and interlaces cartoon sequences and live shots.

Catastrophic incidents, such as the Fukushima disaster in 2011, remind us of another danger of nuclear energy: the possible ultimate MCA (maximum credible accident). Could this be a reason to renounce nuclear power once and for all? Our society is split. But what if a serious alternative existed?

Ever heard of the thorium molten salt reactor? No? That’s not surprising since this topic has been hushed up by the nuclear industry for almost 70 years. And yet Thorium – hardly producing any atomic waste at a very low risk - could revolutionize the energy production as a serious alternative to the nuclear power we know. This documentary investigates why nuclear energy from thorium was a non-starter since the 1950s and why it nevertheless could suddenly become the nuclear fuel of the future.
