The Trial: The State of Russia Vs Oleg Sentsov - Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, 2017, 70’

Born in Uzbekistan in 1974, Askold Kurov has lived in Russia since 1991. After studying philology, theatre, and theology and working for eight years as a package designer, he earned a degree in documentary filmmaking at the Marina Razbezhkina Film School in Moscow. As one of the directors of the award-winning documentary Winter, Go Away! (2002), his next films Leninland and Children 404 won critical acclaim and were screened at numerous festivals. Kurov’s work focuses on human rights issues and social conflicts in contemporary Russia.

Oleg Sentsov is a Ukrainian filmmaker, Euromaidan activist and native of Crimea. As an active opponent of the Russian occupation of Crimea, he was arrested by the Russian security service in May 2014, charged with planned terrorist attacks and transported to Moscow. After over a year in custody, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, despite the fact that the testimonies were given under duress and evidence was insufficient. Director Askold Kurov follows the progress of the trial and the attempts of Oleg’s family, friends and lawyers to save him from prison. Kurov’s investigation gradually reveals an absurd and frightening Kafkaesque story about how anyone can become a victim of a ruthless state machine.

Nominations: F:ACT Award, Politiken’s Audience Award (2017 Copenhagen International Documentary Festival).
