Food safety, Veterinary and phytosanitary policy

The EU’s integrated approach to food safety aims to assure a high level of food safety, animal health, animal welfare, and plant health within the European Union through coherent farm-to-table measures and adequate monitoring, while ensuring the effective functioning of the internal market. It covers the entire food chain, from farm to table.

The Turkish policy framework also follows the EU policy in this area with the aim of aligning animal and plant health as a whole. It is one of the acquis chapters which is open to negotiations.

IPA assistance, since 2002, has mainly focused on this chapter. The EU allocated a large part of its financial support particularly to the control of major animal diseases, setting up animal identification and registration systems, establishing the national food safety laboratory, setting up the plant passport system, etc.
