Synopsis: Gabi just wants to be Gabi. A simple wish one could think, but it’s not. Gabi feels different. As an outspoken 8 year old this never created problems. But as the family moves to a small town and puberty closes in, things start to change. Over the course of 5 years we literally see Gabi growing up before our eyes, challenging the preconceptions of gender, norms and the right to be who you are.
Director’s bio: Engeli Broberg is driven by themes and topics such as loneliness, exclusion and identity. In her film Happy End she explores these matters by following characters at Nordic elderly homes. In The Last Dance she explores similar themes through the perspective of retired dancers who solely identified with their former profession, and in Gabi, through the perspective of a child that refuses to be put in a box.
