Improving the power grid

As the country’s electricity transmission and market operator, the Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEİAŞ) represents the backbone of the electricity market. It is required to provide a functioning transmission system and was involved in integrating the Turkish grid with the internal European power grid, thus enabling the cross-border trade in electricity. In order to fulfil these duties, TEİAŞ was required to improve its operational and maintenance capacity, in particular in the area of live working. This allows work or maintenance tasks to be carried out on live systems, without going through the costly and disruptive procedure of shutting them down.

The project’s aims and core activities

The objective of the project is to improve the institutional structure and capacity of TEİAŞ, by expanding its technical capacity to perform live working, to develop work safety and training activities, and to improve its human resources policies and the stability of its information technology systems.

The first step requires establishing a testing area for live working and equipping it with the necessary tools. Two teams of instructors, each with at least five staff, will be formed for live working training: one for work on overhead lines and the other for substations.

After work safety and training programmes are developed in line with EU standards, the training will proceed of staff, who will be certified upon successful completion of the course.

A final project component will involve making improvements to TEİAŞ’ IT division and setting up a customer relations department.
