Commissioner Várhelyi travels to Türkiye to discuss bilateral relations

Wed, 10/26/2022 - 15:30

Commissioner Várhelyi is travelling to Türkiye between 26 and 27 October to discuss the state of play of EU-Türkiye bilateral relations. Türkiye remains an important partner for the EU in essential areas of joint interest, such as migration, counterterrorism, economy, trade, energy, food security and transport. On 26 October, Commissioner Várhelyi will meet Minister of Trade Mehmet Muş, Minister of Industry Mustafa Varank and Deputy Foreign Minister Faruk Kaymakcı and participates in the High-Level Business Dialogue organised by Eurochambers and The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye. The Dialogue aims to bring the European and Turkish business communities together in order to discuss opportunities and challenges in the EU-Türkiye economic and trade relations. Commissioner is also expected to meet key stakeholders from financial institutions, the business community and local banks to present the Türkiye Investment Platform (TIP), the main vehicle to channel EU investments in the country. On 27 October, Commissioner will also discuss cooperation on migration with Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu.

Considering the current geopolitical challenges, working with Türkiye is ever more relevant, for instance, on energy or food security. In July, Türkiye played a key role in brokering direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in the grain deals and continues to be a crucial and reliable transit country for the energy security of Europe. EU- Türkiye cooperation on migration also remains essential.
