The EU funded International Conference on Disability Rights will take place in Istanbul This Weekend!
The European Union in Turkey invites the journalists and all interested parties to the "International Conference on Disability Rights" which will take place within the framework of the EU funded programme "Promoting Equal Rights of People with Disabilities to improve their Access to Justice in Combating Discrimination". The Head of EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger, will deliver an opening speech at the conference, where 40 International and Turkish Panellists and over 120 representatives from academia, public institutions, media and Civil Society Organizations from all over Turkey will be present.
What is the programme's objective?
The ‘Promoting Equal Rights of People with Disabilities’ Programme, which is funded by the European Union, aims primarily at promoting the rights and full participation of people with disabilities in society, ensuring their right to access to justice on an equal grounds with others and mainstreaming their participation to policy and decision making processes. The programme is implemented by ESHID, the Association for Monitoring Equal Rights.
What is the scope of the programme?
Programme activities focus on achieving the following results:
- strengthened institutional capacity of CSOs in monitoring and reporting, advocacy, legal assistance and promoting equal rights for disabled people as well as mainstreaming rights of persons with disabilities in national and local policy development
- raised awareness of persons with disabilities on their rights regarding their access to all services and combating discrimination
- improved access of persons with disabilities to justice and increased number of strategic law-suits on disability rights
- improved protection of rights of persons with disabilities and implemented anti-discrimination policies
- raised awareness of the General Society regarding the rights of persons with disabilities
What is the scope of the conference?
Representatives from academia, public institutions, media and Civil Society Organizations from all over Turkey that have long been active in the area of Human Rights and Disability rights in particular will attend the meeting. The 2 day international conference aims to present best examples on disability mainstreaming and equal access to justice from an international perspective and to seek international cooperation on equal rights for persons with disabilities.
It will be an opportunity for members of the Monitoring Network to get acquainted with their international counterparts, with whom they can continue exchanging resources and information, and through whom they can conduct international advocacy.
Specific panels will be held with various CSO representatives, academicians, public authorities and other relevant actors on topics such as ‘Framework of the Right to Access to Justice’, ‘Judicial Practices in Turkey on the Cases Concerning Persons with Disabilities’ and ‘Access to Justice for Groups under the Risk of Multiple Discrimination and Groups with Different Type of Disabilities’.
The European Union funds the ‘Promoting Equal Rights of People with Disabilities’ Programme through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). Supporting the development of civil society through more active democratic participation in policy and decision making processes is one of the key areas of EU's financial assistance on the road to Turkey's accession. The IPA II Strategic Paper 2014-2020 relates to civil society and combines a national and comprehensive agenda that focuses on active citizenship and fundamental rights. A pluralist civil society derives its power from financial assistance and requires "respect for fundamental rights and liberties, the rule of law and the possibility of social and political change."
