The Civil Society Days organised in the framework of a European Union-funded project supporting the cooperation between public sector and civil society organizations will be held on the 29th and 30th of November in Ankara. The event will be attended by Deputy Head of EU Delegation Gabriel Munuera Vinals, and by General Director for relations with Civil Society of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Turkey Erkan KILIÇ.

There are more than 110 000 associations in Turkey, with a total of approximately ten million citizens actively engaged in such organisations dealing with a wide range of issues from culture to sport, from human rights to service delivery to marginalised populations.

"One of the key objectives of EU/Turkey collaboration in the field of civil society support is to improve the overall environment in which civil society operates so as to allow for regular consultation and active participation in policy processes. A strong and empowered civil society is a crucial component of any democratic system. It represents and fosters pluralism. It contributes to build more accountability, leading to enhanced social cohesion and more open and better functioning democracies," said Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of the EU Delegation in Turkey, on the occasion.

The project "Strengthening the Public Sector for Cooperation with Civil Society Organisations" aims to support the General Directorate for relations with civil society of the Ministry of Interior at central and local levels. Through organisations of trainings targeting public officials as well as Civil Society Days in 20 selected provinces, it is expected that this project will contribute to a better understanding of the role and potential contribution of right-based civil society organisations in decision-making processes.

This two-year project, whose beneficiaries are the Ministry of Interior and Directorate of EU Affairs within Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is funded by the European Union under the Instrument for Pre-Accession for a value of EUR 2.370.150, equal to the 90% of the total cost.
