“European Mobility Week” begins! Run, pedal, walk; “Mix and Move”!

In the scope of the European Mobility Week, Delegation of the European Union to Turkey invites people and cities to interact, produce together and move more on September 16-22. Come on! Move and establish ‘Better Connections’!

Celebrated every year on September 16-22, European Mobility Week (EMW) energizes cities and people. This year, with their joyful program of events promoting more movement in Ankara, İzmir and Kayseri, the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey invites cities and people once again to be together. An initiative of the European Commission, EMW is celebrated around the world with the objective of attaining zero-carbon, greener, cleaner, sustainable transport and sustainable cities. Every year celebrated around a different theme, the 2022 theme of EMW is “Better Connections. And the year’s slogan for the events organized under the coordination of Union of Municipalities of Turkey at national level and with the support of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey is “Mix and Move”.

Micro-behavioral Changes and Sustainable Cities

During the EMW, numerous fun activities will be organized in Ankara, İzmir and Kayseri including panels, chats, walking tours, bike trainings for kids and women, yoga classes and orienteering competitions in order to raise awareness for a more mobile life style. Small changes in behavior like going to the office on foot, using public transport or bike instead of individual cars, will be promoted for sustainable transport and cities.  

Ambassador Landrut’s visit to Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş

In the scope of the EMW events, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut will pay a visit to Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş on Saturday, September 17, in his office.  Following this meeting, the duo and the delegations accompanying them will take a ride on the electric bus of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality financed with the European Union’s IPA funds in the company of members of the press.

On the same day, Discover Altındağ on the move with a Bike will be organized at Altındağ Municipality. The EMW kick off meeting of the Altındağ Municipality and Union of Municipalities of Turkey will take place at the Başkent Millet Bahçesi.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director for EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı, Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Secretary General of Turkish Union of Municipalities Dr. Hayri Baraçlı, Governor of Ankara Vasp Şahin and Mayor of Altındağ Assoc. Prof. Asım Balcı will deliver the opening speeches at the meeting.

What would a 'Car-Free Sunday' look like in Ankara?

In order to reach zero carbon targets and raise awareness in favour of public transportation and clean, smart transportation solutions, the “Car-Free Sunday” event will be held in Ankara on Sunday, September 18. The event will be held on Ashgabat Street (Bahçelievler 7th Street). On the same day, Bahçelievler 7th Street will be closed to traffic and the "Great Ankara Cycling Tour" will be held. Crowd will gather at 11:00 at Kızılay Shopping Mall for the Cycling Tour.  Head of EU Delegation, Ambassador Meyer-Landrut and EU ambassadors will also participate in the cycling tour.

Ceza Concert at Anıtpark

Bahçelievler 7th Street will also host many awareness raising events such as concerts, yoga activity, fun activities for children, dance activity and DJ performance on Sunday, September 18th. The most stimulating of all will be the public concert of the famous rap singer Ceza at Anıtpark. Residents of the Capital will enjoy the Ceza concert. Needless to say that all residents of Ankara are invited to the concert Ceza with his exhilarating rhythms as well as all other events!

There is an active program in Izmir

As a city that catches up with trends and can put them into action on topics such as aligning with climate targets, digitalization and flexibility, İzmir will celebrate the European Mobility Week with an 'active' program.

 “Urban Mobility Plan” Project Launch will be held

The "Car-Free Day" event will also be held in Izmir. Head of the European Union Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, will participate in the Car-Free Day to be held in Izmir. Opening Event of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) Project financed by the European Union will be held on the same day. 4 projects of İzmir, on climate and energy policies carried out with EU grants will be screened in an Open-Air Television program. Head of the European Union Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer will participate in the program.

Maritime Decarbonization to be Discussed

As part of the European Mobility Week, the first of a series of workshops addressing decarbonization of mobility in Turkish cities will be held in Izmir. In this context, on Friday, September 23, Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, will deliver an opening speech at the "City Ports and Maritime Decarbonization" workshop organized by the World Bank. The theme of this special event will be 'City Harbors'.

Transportation to Cumhuriyet Square in Kayseri by Tram

Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut will visit Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality as part of the EMW. The Ambassador and the accompanying delegation will travel from Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality to Cumhuriyet Square by taking the tram, which is one of the best alternatives of public transport and has been decorated in accordance with the EMW theme.

2217 cities and towns from 41 countries are participating this year

The European Mobility Week, organized by the European Commission since 2002, promotes cities and municipalities to take and support sustainable transport measures. This year, while events are organised in 204 different locations in Turkey, 2217 different cities and towns from a total of 41 countries, including Turkey, have registered for the EMW. So far, 494 new mobility events have been entered into the system by all participants.
