The European Commission launches the 18th European Mobility Week (#mobilityweek), its flagship campaign that runs from 16 – 22 September annually with the aim to improve quality of life by promoting clean mobility and sustainable urban transport.
More than 2,800 cities in 48 countries will hold events to mark this year’s celebration, giving people the opportunity to explore the role of sustainable mobility in their daily lives and to try out clean transport modes. This year, 61 municipalities from Turkey are taking part in the European Mobility Week. Turkish civil society organisations are also very active and are organising actions promoting the idea of sustainable urban mobility in more than 80 cities.
The week culminates in the trademark car-free day on the 22 September.
This year’s motto is Walk with Us. It puts the spotlight on safe walking and cycling and the benefits it can have for our health, our environment, and our bank balance! Active transport modes such as walking and cycling are emission-free and help to keep our hearts and bodies healthy.
In line with the spirit of the week, the EU Ambassador Christian Berger will participate in the events and walk with the mayors of Konya, Istanbul and Ankara municipalities.
- The walk in Konya will start on 19 September at 13:30 from Aslanlı Kışla Caddesi and finish at Mevlana Square with the participation of Konya Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay and Deputy Minister of Environment and Urbanisation Mrs Fatma Varank.
- The walk in Istanbul will take place on 22 September at Bağdat Caddesi starting at 10 o'clock from Şaşkınbakkal and finishing at Göztepe Park with the participation of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
- The walk in Ankara will start on 22 September at 17:30 from Kugulu Park and finish at Anıt Park with the participation of Mayor Mansur Yavas.
- The closing event in Ankara will be in on 22 September at Anıtpark with the public concert of Haluk Levent.
On the occasion of the start of the European Mobility Week the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger said: "Sustainable mobility means better quality of life for citizens by promoting cleaner and more fuel-efficient transport modes, and more human-powered travel. It’s a great way of keeping the focus at the local level and helping towns and cities in Turkey to improve the environmental performance of their transport system. "
The European Mobility Week campaign provides the perfect opportunity to present sustainable mobility alternatives to local residents and to explain the challenges that cities are facing. By taking part, cities can showcase the benefits of cleaner transport choices and make progress towards better mobility in Europe.
We say walk with us and experience the benefits for yourself!
