EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK 2018:

Mix and Move!

We are launching the 17th EUROPEAN MOBILITYWEEK !

In partnership with the Union of Municipalities of Turkey the Delegation of the European Union started to prepare the flagship campaign for Mobility and Transport.  As every year Mobility Week will take place from 16 to 22 September 2018 in several cities of Turkey, together with events in Europe.

Today’s event is part of the Information Days organised by the Union of Municipalities of Turkey in Antalya from 10 to 12 July 2018.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Christian Berger and Mr Hakan TÜTÜNCÜ, President of the Union of Mediterranean Municipalities, will open the meeting.  European Commissioner for Transport Ms Violeta Bulc will greet the audience in a video message. Mr Hayrettin Güngör, Secretary General of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, will participate in the opening session of the Information Days.

Organized by the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, the Information Days take place in Antalya between 10 and 12 July 2018, bringing together mayors, local representatives and experts to discuss issues on mobility and public transport and share best practices.

From this year on, the Union of Municipalities of Turkey is the National Coordinator for the initiative and will provide support to Turkish municipalities in organising local campaigns and events in the context of the Mobility Week in Turkey.

EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc has called for 2018 to be the ‘Year of Multimodality’. Within this framework, European Mobility Week has adopted the call-to-action #Mix and Move! Multimodality promotes the use of different modes of transport for urban trips, both for passengers and for goods.

Combining different modes of transport can maximize benefits for society by reducing pollution, congestion, and improving public health and overall quality of life. Citizens pay less and enjoy more reliable and comfortable transport services. Municipalities are encouraged to engage in sustainable urban mobility planning (SUMP) – an innovative tool – in order to bring citizens back to the center of urban life.

Local authorities making efforts in sustainable urban mobility are invited to apply for the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award as well as for the Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP Award) through www.mobilityweek.eu/sump-award/. SUMP rewards municipalities that have developed successful mobility plans addressing transport needs and challenges. The EU provides funds to support Turkish municipalities if they decide to prepare SUMP for their cities.

Background information:

EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK takes place every year on 16-22 September. Since its introduction in 2002, the impact of EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK has steadily grown, both across Europe and around the world. In 2017, the campaign broke its participation record: 2,526 towns and cities from 50 countries including seven municipalities in Turkey, organized activities during the week.

Over half of the participating towns and cities implemented permanent measures, amounting to a total of 7,993, primarily focusing on mobility management, accessibility and new or improved bicycle facilities.

The week culminates in a Car-Free Day, where participating towns and cities set aside one or several areas solely for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport for a whole day.
