In the context of the International Human Rights Day, Deputy Heads of EU Missions met with a group of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) on 18 December 2017.

The European Union Guidelines on HRDs as well as the EU Local Strategy to support and defend the HRDs in Turkey provide a framework for the cooperation between the EU Delegation and EU Member States Missions in the field of human rights. The EU pays tribute to the work of the HRDs in Turkey.

The meeting on 18 December provided a valuable opportunity to discuss main challenges HRDs are facing in Turkey and ways to improve and strengthen EU support to the work of HRDs and human rights situation in general.

HRDs shared their concerns about the shrinking space for civil society and limitations to the fundamental rights, namely freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, in the context of the State of Emergency, including recent restrictive decisions targeting activities of the LGBTI community in Turkey.

While celebrating the International Human Rights Day, the EU and its Member States pledged to continue following closely human rights developments in Turkey and work on improving present conditions.
