EU FUNDS A PROJECT TO IMPROVE INTERNATIONAL JUDICIAL COOPERATION IN CRIMINAL MATTERS

Thu, 10/14/2021 - 17:43

The European Union launched a project in Ankara on 14 October with the aim of enabling judicial cooperation in criminal matters between Turkey and the European Union Member States in a more efficient and faster way. The event was attended by the Minister of Justice, Mr Abdulhamit Gul, Council of Europe Director of Information Society and Action against Crime, Mr Jan Kleijssen, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs & Director for EU Affairs, Mr Faruk Kaymakcı and the Head of EU Delegation, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut.

With an EU contribution of €2.7 million, the project aims at strengthening international judicial cooperation in criminal matters between Turkey and EU Member States, based on international conventions of the Council of Europe, United Nations and bilateral protocols. The project will not only further review the law, in particular, its compliance, or otherwise, with recent developments in international standards, but also train judges and prosecutors to improve the quality of incoming and outgoing requests for international cooperation.

The high volume of requests for international cooperation has put an enormous burden and caseload on the Central Authority under the Ministry of Justice. The project will establish a central monitoring system, which will enable the Ministry to have up-to-date knowledge of the flow of incoming and outgoing requests to understand and to make the prompt adjustments as necessary.

Finally, the project will seek to strengthen the linkages between the Turkish authorities and the various networks for international cooperation, and will facilitate networking and exchange of experiences between Turkish judges, prosecutors and representatives of the Central Authority with their counterparts in EU Member States.

The project will be implemented by the Council of Europe.
