EU helps Turkey improve the security of its Network and Information Systems
The opening ceremony of the EU-supported "Technical Assistance for Achieving Harmony with the EU Regarding the implementation of the Network and Information Security (NIS) Directive" Project takes place on 11th April in Ankara. The Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr. Ömer Fatih Sayan; the Chairman of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority, Mr. Ömer Abdullah Karagözoğlu; and the Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey Mr. Gabriel Munuera Viňals, will participate to the event.
What is the scope of the project?
Network and information systems (NIS) play a vital role in our society. Their reliability and security are essential to economic and social activities and in particular to the functioning of the economy as a whole. The magnitude, frequency and impact of security incidents are increasing, and represent a major threat to the functioning of network and information systems. Interruptions in the systems may impede the pursuit of economic activities, generate substantial financial losses, undermine user confidence and cause major economic damages.
This project has a total budget of € 523.000 and will contribute to the alignment of Turkey’s regulatory framework regarding network and information security with the NIS Directive, which was designed and adopted in 2016 to reduce fragmentation in the approach to security of network and information systems so to prevent unequal level of protection for consumers and businesses.
On the occasion of the event, the Head of EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger underlined that any gaps between the existing network and information security related legislations and the provisions of the NIS Directive will be clearly identified and guidance on how to address these gaps will be provided with the project. He added that "the EU will work closely with the Information and Communication Technologies Authority and this project will contribute to strengthening cooperation opportunities between Turkey and the EU to meet the objectives of the EU’s Digital Single Market Strategy."
What is the NIS Directive?
The NIS Directive (2016/1148) is the first piece of EU-wide legislation on cybersecurity. It provides legal measures to boost the overall level of cybersecurity in the EU. It was adopted by the European Parliament on 6 July 2016, entered into force in August 2016 and has already been transposed into national legislation in the vast majority of EU member states.
