EU Project Supported Prevention of Radicalisation in Turkish Prisons
The European Union-funded project establishing an effective system for the prevention of radicalisation in Turkish prisons in line with EU standards will be finalised in Ankara on 02 July. The event will be attended by the Director General for Prisons and Detention Houses of the Ministry of Justice, Mr Yunus Alkac, the Interior Counsellor of the Spanish Embassy, Colonel Antonio Doblas and the Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation to Turkey, Mr Andre Lys.
Acts of terrorism constitute one of the most heinous cases of violence aimed at creating often arbitrary and widespread fear. The EU and Turkey are committed to fighting terrorism and providing the best possible protection for their citizens. Prevention of radicalisation has been one of the main pillars of the EU’s counter terrorism policy for over a decade. The EU and relevant international organisations identify the potential role of prisons as high-risk incubators for fundamentalism, radicalisation and violent extremism.
With the support of this project, early warning mechanisms for potential threats and likelihood of (further) radicalisation of offenders were established. Effective disengagement/de-radicalisation programmes were developed to work on violent behaviour. Training programmes were designed for the prison staff on their approaches to violent extremist and high-risk offenders, on interventions and communication in prisons. Overall, the EU project took an important step in developing effective methods of intervention and approach for managers and staff to prevent radicalisation line with EU best practice.
With an EU contribution of €2 million, the project was implemented together with the Ministry of Interior of Spain in a twinning modality.
