EU Supports Turkey on its Fight Against Lumpy Skin Disease
The opening event of the EU funded project supporting Turkey's fight against Lumpy Skin Disease in livestock will take place on 5th July 2019 at Point Hotel in Ankara. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Mr Fatih Metin and Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Minister Counsellor Mr Gabriel Munuera Viñals will participate the event.
What is the scope of the project?
The project "Control and Prevention of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)" aims at vaccinating large ruminants against the disease, while increasing the diagnostic capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to spot and contain the disease as well as raising awareness amongst farmers of prevention. It will support Turkey's fight against the LSD and will contribute to the improvement of the animal health situation in Turkey.
In order to achieve those objectives, a mass vaccination will be carried out for large ruminants over the next three years. Disease spreading vectors will be entrapped and identified through light traps. Epidemiological analysis will be carried out and farmers' awareness of the disease will be increased. Laboratory staff will also receive trainings on setting up the light traps, on epidemiological evaluation as well as on reporting and mapping of vector distribution activities.
The total budget of the project is EUR 14.8 million, with a contribution by the European Union of EUR 12.7 million.
On Lumpy Skin Disease:
On the occasion the Head of EU Delegation, Ambassador Christian Berger said: "The project we are kicking-off today will be supporting Turkey's ongoing efforts to reach a high level of animal health."
