Within the framework of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage, the European Union will take part in the "Heritage İstanbul Restoration, Archaeology, Museum Technologies Fair and Conference", set to open its doors in İstanbul on April 12, 2018. The Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Minister Gabriel Munuera Vinals, will participate in the event, which will discuss the protection and maintenance of Turkey's rich cultural heritage, and historic and artistic assets, as well as passing them on to future generations. The world cultural heritage site of Göbeklitepe, where the EU supports protection activities, will also be discussed.
The EU declared 2018 the "Year of Cultural Heritage". In this framework, the EU Delegation to Turkey establishes closer contacts with institutions and organisations working for cultural heritage in Turkey as well as sectoral suppliers, museologists, and archaeologists.
In addition to Turkey’s rich cultural heritage and its protection, other subjects set to be discussed at the conference include archaeological technologies, renovation, repair, maintenance and protection methods and techniques, museology techniques, training, management, and communication in museology.
At the fair, the world cultural heritage site of Göbeklitepe, whose discovery led to shifting perceptions of history, will also be on the European Union agenda. The European Union, the major sponsor of steps taken to preserve Göbeklitepe, has supported the construction of two protective roofs at the site under the scope of the "Revival of History in Şanlıurfa" project, in collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute. At the conference, Göbeklitepe, which has been nominated for UNESCO’s World Heritage List, will be taken up in Aslı Özyar's speech “Göbeklitepe in the Context of Transition to Permanent Settlements” and Assistant Professor Zeynep Eres's speech “Göbeklitepe in the Process of Nomination to the UNESCO World Heritage List”.
The Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger, said on the occasion of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage: "Our cultural heritage plays a vital role in the building of Europe's future. This is why in 2018, we as the European Union are seeking ways to preserve the cultural heritage and make the best use of related opportunities. Through cherishing our cultural heritage, we can discover our diversity and start an inter-cultural dialogue on what we have in common. Let's once again celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage."
