The European Union assists 3500 migrants in returning home voluntarily in partnership with IOM and DGMM
The EU Delegation in partnership with the Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM) and IOM launched the second phase of a programme that provides assistance to migrants living in Turkey who opt to return to their country of origin. The “Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) of Irregular Migrants in Turkey” project helps migrants get home and settle in a safe and dignified way. The project is financed by the EU with 5.4 million EUR.
Throughout the next three years a minimum of 3,500 migrants will be provided with assistance to make an informed decision on return and complete the journey to their home countries in safety and dignity. The most vulnerable of these will be provided with tailored reintegration support to overcome challenges related to their return.
In addition to the operational support to voluntary return, capacity building support will be provided to DGMM: At least 100 DGMM staff working in the field of migration management at local and central level will take part in capacity building workshops and study visits to selected European states for observing best practices in AVRR frameworks. The project will also follow-up on the implementation of the first phase and assess its effectiveness and sustainability of assistance delivered so far. The project will be followed up by a third phase that will stretch out until 2020-21.
The Head of EU Delegation to Turkey, Mr. Christian Berger, said on the occasion: "The safe and orderly return of refugees must take place in a humane and dignified way in full respect of fundamental rights and the principle of non-refoulement as is underlined in the European Agenda for Migration. It is in this vein that we cooperate with Turkey to build capacity for the management of returns and support for reintegration measures. "
