Ankara- The success of the EU funded project "Facilitating Access of Disadvantaged People to Labour Market" with a total value of € 38 million has been highlighted by the participation of Abdurrahim Boynukalın, Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Kürşad Arat, Deputy Undersecretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and Mr. François Begeot, Counsellor at the European Union Delegation to Turkey.
The project provided EU funded scholarships to 40,000 girls and boys in need who were in their last year of university education. The scholarships are paid during the 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 academic years. The impact assessment of the scholarship scheme has demonstrated its positive outcomes for the beneficiaries, where 55% currently have a job.
This large scale project has helped decrease drop-out rates of university students in need. In addition, thousands of students benefiting from the scholarships, credits and hostel services of the Higher Education Credits and Hostels Institution have now more information on how to get jobs, further education and on-the-job training.
The project has also revamped collaboration between the Credits and Hostels Institution and its partners, including universities, to serve young people better. To make this happen staff working at hostels, social workers and psychologists have received training.
A survey aiming to identify the needs and expectations of university students has been carried out, directly with the university students. The result is that further action targeting young people is needed.
The Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Christian Berger said: "We have to trust in young people. We need a favorable environment for young people to thrive, we need their enthusiasm to engage their critical thinking and their sense of responsibility. I congratulate the Ministry of Youth and Sports for successfully completing such an important project aiming for positive prospects and a bright future for young people."
The EU is closely working with Turkey to help tackle employment, education and social inclusion challenges. In addition to the €474 million allocated by the EU to Turkey in the form of grants for the period 2007-2013, financial assistance continues with a total allocation of €435 million for this sector, implemented by Turkey's Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
As a result of the positive cooperation between the EU and Turkey, tens of thousands of people have benefited from the projects, leading to improved skills, continued education and good jobs.
