Turkish teacher Selcuk Yusuf Aslan awarded with the Green Skills Award by the European Training Foundation (ETF)

Mr. Selçuk Yusuf Arslan was awarded with the Green Skills Award by the European Training Foundation (ETF) with a project he developed on environment and coding.

134 applications from 39 countries were submitted to the Green Skills Award competition organized by the ETF. The Project called "Environmental themed studies in coding education" which was carried out under the supervision of Selçuk Yusuf Arslan, Information Technologies teacher was among the top 3 most rated studies voted by public.

Selcuk Arslan, from the Ataturk Vocational and technical high-school emerged for raising awareness on the impact of online learning on the environment. During the pandemic period, they have organised online activities with students on the theme of synchronous and asynchronous environment. Thanks to these studies, students could learn coding and gain environmental awareness.

At the online award ceremony of the competition, Altındağ Atatürk Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School was selected as one of the three winners of the competition besides winners from Palestine and India. Three winners were unveiled during an online event organised by the ETF jointly with UNESCO, with the collaboration of EBRD, ILO and UNICEF, entitled Building lifelong learning systems: skills for green and inclusive societies in the digital era(21-25 June 2021).

"Software that calculates the carbon footprint", "game-based educational software that explains hydrogen fuel cells ", which also won the international first place in the FCHgo! Project Competition, a project of female students called "More Coding for Girls", which develops robotic solutions to environmental problems and "Code for Nature" carried out in a village school in İzmir province are the projects carried out by the school in environment and coding.

Today, on the 9th of November, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey congratulated Mr. Selçuk Yusuf Arslan and presented him the Green Skills award of the ETF and European Union.

About Dr Selcuk Yusuf Arslan

He works as an information technologies teacher for 15 years and works at Ankara Altındağ Atatürk Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. He completed his undergraduate and graduate education at Gazi University Computer Education and Computer Education programs; He completed his doctorate at Hacettepe University Educational Management program. His thesis is on STEM Approach in Realizing Sustainable Development Goals: A Policy Proposal for the Turkish Education System. Arslans STEM education focuses on improving the coding skills of especially female students and solutions to climate change through technology.
