"Walk With Us!" European Mobility Week Launch Tomorrow
The President of the Union of Turkish Municipalities, Ms. Fatma Şahin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of EU Affairs, Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı and the Head of the European Union Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger, will organise a joint press conference to launch the 2019 European Mobility Week (EMW). The event will take place on Thursday, 11 July 2019 at 15.00 at the premises of the Union of Turkish Municipalities. (Atatürk Boulevard, No: 229).
The European Mobility Week is celebrated every year from 16-22 September. This year's activities will focus on Safe Walking and Biking. Participation by Turkish cities increases every year. In 2018, 26 cities participated and this year's target is for 40 cities. Ankara, İzmir and Bartın are the first three cities which have already registered for 2019 EMW and planned activities for that September week. More cities are expected to register in the coming days.
The aim of the EMW campaign is to promote public transport, walking and cycling and other forms of sustainable mobility. Walking and cycling are the two most active modes of transport and very crucial for the future of our towns and cities. They provide substantial health benefits and are free of CO2 emissions, reliable, socially and economically accessible to all.
Unfortunately, walking and cycling are underestimated in several Member States in the European Union and Turkey alike. The European and Turkish cities should provide safer walking and cycling opportunities to help change people's perceptions. As streets become safer for walking and cycling, cities become more inclusive with a lot more public space accessible to all. People will be happier and appreciate their cities more. We are all pedestrians when we walk to the bus stop, the train station or when we go for a walk with our friends and family, or when we go shopping. It is the natural thing to do.
The EU Delegation invites all cities in Turkey wishing to provide more sustainable transport options for their inhabitants to register and take part in the European Mobility Week between 16 – 22 September of this year. Let's walk together, let's make our cities more liveable!
Participate in our joint press conference to learn more about this year's theme and activities.
***Please note that the press conference will only be about the Mobility Week Events.
No other questions will be taken.
