Sat, 02/03/2018 - 13:12

Thanks to the EU-funded Winter Tourism Project in Ardahan, the city and its surroundings will as of now become an even more attractive tourism location for winter sports lovers. Minister of Science Industry and Technology H.E. Faruk Özlü, Minister of Transport Maritime Affairs and Communications H.E. Ahmet Arslan, Minister of Youth and Sports H.E. Osman Aşkın Bak, and Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Mr. Gabriel Munuera Vinals will open this project in the city's Yalnızçam district today, 3 February 2018.

The project will contribute to the social and economic development of Ardahan by supporting the early phases of Yalnızçam’s development as a winter tourism centre. The European Union is co-financing the installation of a 4-persons modern detachable ski lift with a length of 3000m and total capacity of 800 persons per hour.

The project is financed under the Regional Competitiveness Operational Programme, which is managed by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology. The project's total budget is €6.2 million, with the EU contributing €4.8 million. The Special Provincial Administration of Ardahan is the project's beneficiary. In addition to the infrastructure investment, tourism experts are assisting the beneficiary to manage the "Winter Sports Tourism Centre" and also to attract new investors. Participants from 50 small and medium size tourism enterprises will be trained to make the most of the improved infrastructure.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger, said on the occasion: "Europe ranks first in winter tourism in terms of the number of ski resorts, length of ski tracks and number of lifts. The European countries have set the standards and guided the supply and demand for ski tourism. More than one third of the winter tourism centres in the world is concentrated in the European Alps with around 40% of the mechanical facilities. We believe the Ardahan project will support the further development of Turkey as a winter tourism destination and complement the already existing European projects".

With the operationalisation of the project, approximately additional 2000 tourists per year will visit Ardahan which offers variety of alternative tourism activities.
